The path to becoming a fashion designer is filled with obstacles that require discipline and talent to overcome. It all begins with getting into a good college that will help you develop and polish your skills. While there are 3 year and 4 year programs, a 4 year program is always preferable.
In those four years students will learn about fabric, techniques and technology. Students will enter the industry with head start with the kind of training they receive from institutions like NIFT. A degree in Fashion Design can prepare you for a number of job opportunities in the Fashion Industry. Students can try for Fashion Design Exams at UG (B.Des/B.F.Tech) or PG (M.Des/M.F.Tech) level.
Students of Fashion design can choose to specialize in areas like Apparel Design , Lifestyle Accessory Design , Leather Design, Textile Design, Jewellery Design, Knitwear Design & Fashion Communication. Colleges other than NIFT’s offer other streams as well.
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) conducts NIFT entrance exam in order to shortlist aspirants for admission in design programmes offered by it. Considered to be a pioneer in fashion education, NIFT has its headquarters in New Delhi. Apart from this city, NIFT has domestic centres at Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Shillong and Raebareli.
To get admission into Bachelor of Design (BDes), Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech), Master of Design (MDes), Master of Fashion Management (MFM) and Master of Fashion Technology (MFTech) courses at NIFT, candidates need to appear for NIFT Entrance Test. The institute also gives candidates a chance to apply for two programmes in a given year which candidates can give as per their own convenience and need. Candidates can also secure admission directly in second year of BDes and BFTech programmes offered at NIFT campuses. For this, candidates need to appear for a written test that is conducted for NIFT Lateral Entry Admissions (NLEA).
NIFT entrance exam is three-tiered in its format for BDes and MDes course admissions. As part of the NIFT entrance exam 2022 for BDes and MDes admission, candidates have to first appear for Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT).NIFT offers BDes programme in the following specializations:

NIFT Eligibility Criteria 2022 Candidates will acquaint the details of the required qualifying exam and age limit to appear in the entrance test by going through the eligibility criteria of NIFT 2022. It is imperative for the students to look through the NIFT eligibility criteria before filling the application form. NIFT 2022 Eligibility - B.Des Admission Qualifying ExamAge Limit1. Students must pass the Class 12 exam in the 10+2 pattern of examination with Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subject from any recognized Central/ State Board of Secondary Examination, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, and Council for Indian School of Certificate Examination, New Delhi or, 2. NIFT Entrance Exam 2022 General Eligibility NIFT has set some basic eligibility standards that a candidate needs to clear before filling the Application Form. These standards are categorized as listed below:On the basis of Academic Qualification If a candidate is in 12th/final year of college/final year of diploma does not submit the examination result at the time of admission or counselling, his/her admission depends on the following conditions: -
Candidate below 18 years of age has to submit an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.10 in the prescribed Proforma duly signed by the parent/guardian. Submission of the false document is a punishable offence.
Candidates have to submit their qualifying degree to the campus director or joint director of the allotted college on or before a date to be announced soon.
In case a candidate fails to submit his/her qualifying degree at the time of admission, his/her admission will be considered null and void.
If a candidate’s result has not been declared at the time of admission and he/she is seeking provisional admission, in that case he/she shall have to provide relevant proof of having cleared the examination.
Candidates who are seeking provisional admission will have to bring the date sheet/admit card/Principal’s certificate as proof of having taken the exam. Same thing applies to the candidates who have taken the compartment/supplementary exam in the 12thstandard or final year of graduation/diploma.
Candidates who are seeking provisional admission will only be considered for admission if their result has not been declared by the institution or university. In any other case, their admission will liable to be cancelled under provisional admission category.
On the basis of Age
The maximum age allowed for general category candidates as of October 01, 2021, is 23 years.
There will be 5 years’ relaxation in age limit for SC/ST or Differently Abled Person (PHP) candidates.
There is no age limit for candidates for applying for master degree programs.
NIFT 2022 Eligibility Criteria- Important Point to be noted
Apart from the eligibility criteria mentioned in the above table, the following are few of the norms which students will be eligible to apply for NIFT 2022 in a certain condition.
Students appearing in the final exam of the qualifying exam can also apply for NIFT 2022.
If the Class 12/ final year / final semester exam result is not yet announced till the date of NIFT counselling procedure, then students will be strictly provisional subject to the following conditions.
Students will have to submit the final result of the qualifying exam before September 30, 2021.
Candidates have to submit duly sign an affidavit of Rs.10 on a non-judicial stamp paper. The candidate’s parent/guardian must sign the affidavit if he/she is less than 18 years of age.
Candidates seeking provisional admission as the final result of their qualifying exam is awaited for declaration, then students have to submit proof that they have passed all the papers of the previous years/ semesters of the qualifying exam.
Students who are appearing for compartment examination(s) of 10+2 standard will be considered only for provisional admission. But, they are required to pass the compartment exam from the same board. If candidates fail to complete, then the candidature will be automatically cancelled from the provisional admission and forfeiture of the entire fee.

NIFT Entrance Exam Syllabus-2022
NIFT entrance exam comprises of Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT). Aspirants who clear these tests are shortlisted to appear for the Situation Test as well as Group Discussion and Personal Interview round.
NIFT Entrance Exam Pattern: Creative Ability Test (CAT) 2022
“This test is administered to judge the intuition skill, power of observation, innovation in development of a concept and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of colour and illustration skills”, states the official NIFT website.

Candidates seeking admissions in BDes and MDes programmes at NIFT need to appear for GAT. This test comprises of the below mentioned sections:

NIFT Situation Test-2022
Candidates who have been shortlisted for NIFT BDes admissions on the basis of their written test need to appear for NIFT Situation Test 2018 wherein their “material handling and innovative ability” will be tested.
Here, candidates will be evaluated on “on Space Visualization, Innovative and creative use of given material, composition of elements, colour scheme, construction skill , finesse of the model and overall presentation etc. These parameters will be checked with the write up explaining the concept / idea behind the model constructed. The weightage of the write up is 30%. Since the medium of teaching in NIFT is English, the write-up will be in English language. No marks will be given for write-up in any other language”, specifies the official website.
NIFT Group Discussion
Candidates who have been shortlisted for Masters Programmes on the basis of their written entrance examination need to undergo Case Study based Group Discussions (GD) and NIFT Personal Interview round. The photograph must be in colour and must be taken in a professional studio. Photographs with self-composed portraits will not be accepted.
Photographs must be taken against a white background.
The photograph must be recent and should have been taken after September 1, 2020.
Facial features should occupy about 80% of the area in the photograph, with a clear view of the whole face directly looking into the camera. The main features of the face must not be covered by hair of the head, any cloth, or any shadow. The forehead, both eyes, nose, cheeks, lips, and chin should be clearly visible.
If you wear spectacles, glare on glasses is not acceptable in your photo. Spectacles with dark or tinted glasses are not permitted; only clear glasses are permitted.
The digital version of your passport size photograph is to be uploaded in JPG/JPEG format, with a maximum size of 50 KB.
Signature
The signature must be in black colour only and must be written against a white background.
The signature must be scanned. Mobile phone photographs of signatures are not acceptable.

Important - If any of the above-mentioned documents are in a language other than Hindi or English, an authentic translation in any of the mentioned languages should be produced duly verified by the issuing institution/gazette officer/self-attested by the candidate at the time of NIFT 2021 counselling procedure. Note - A registration confirmation message will be received on the registered email id. Email-ID, Date of birth and Password as filled by the candidates will be used as login credentials to complete the online registration for NIFT counselling 2021. Step 2: Upload the documents

Pay the registration fee
All successfully submitted documents and fees will be verified by NIFT. After the verification, candidates will receive a Zoom meeting link with the respective date of counselling and further instructions on their registered email id. Candidates must note that in case if the NIFT official found any issues in the submitted documents and received the fee then registration will be rejected & sent back to the candidates with remarks for correction. The candidate will be able to re-upload the documents or reprocess the fee as per the rejection remark within the stipulated time. In case of failure in re-submission of form within the stipulated time, candidate registration for counselling will be cancelled and candidate will only be able to participate in subsequent rounds of counselling if any.Important guidelines for NIFT counselling 2021
NIFT conducts the counselling process to fill 4517 seats over its seventeen campuses. For the first round of NIFT 2021 counselling, candidates are not required to pay any registration fee.
To register for the NIFT counselling, students need to enter the requisite information such as form number, date of birth and password. Candidates must upload the soft copy of valid documents for verification purpose during the online counselling session.
After a successful registration, candidates will receive a Zoom meeting link on their registered email id.
Based on the merit list and seat availability students will be called for counselling. In the presence of the nodal officer, students can select the seat by clicking on the computer screen.
Candidates will have to pay the full fee at the NIFT campus after the allocated seat. Students will receive an allotment letter/receipt duly signed by the nodal officer, which is mandatory to collect from the registration portal.

Fashion Designers : One of the highest profile roles in the industry, designers are the creative genius’ who work on the design of clothing and fashion ranges. Designers can work in any specialization, from handbags to sportswear to children’s wear.
Fashion Photographer : Fashion photography is a coveted job, such photographers are sought after in magazines, catalogs, advertising agencies and can also be self employed once they’ve established themselves.
Stylist : Stylists assess the overall appearance and needs of each client to determine which styling techniques and/or makeup will help the client achieve the desired look. With a good clientele this occupation is certainly lucrative.
Visual Merchandiser : A merchandiser help execute the ideas put forth by their boss or corporate team, who decide on a certain theme or set of standard that need to be met, and then translate it to how the store’s merchandise is arranged.
Garment Technologist : They are involved in choosing the appropriate fabric and designs, they work with patterns so they oversee sizing, fitting and material testing, they also analyse the product returns and faults.
Fashion Editor : Typical work includes supervising other editors and writers, writing or editing articles themselves, formulating and styling fashion photo shoots, choosing photos for publication, choosing fashion items. Looking up trends for publication ,researching trends in the fashion industry.
Fashion Production Manager : The fashion industry production manager may assume the role of event planner, overseeing model fittings and acting as a liaison between hair stylists and makeup professionals to convey the designer’s styling directions.
Product Specialists : They develop materials from research, to production, to distribution , to presentation to customer reception. They are responsible for assessing future and planning for future product lines.
Chief Innovation Officer : This occupation requires the individual to create innovation plans researching new products and assessing target market and current trends.

Textile Design (TD) - Stresses on Woven, print design, embroidery and surface embellishment are the core textile subjects.
Knitwear Design (KD) - Focuses on Knitwear apparel, Garment Construction, Pattern Making for Knits, Flat and Circular Knitting, Computerized Flat Knitting etc.
Fashion Communication (FC) - An extensive study of brand identity, visual merchandising and fashion journalism.

Apparel Production (AP) - The course curriculum aims to introduce different essential streams including apparel manufacturing technology, information technology, quality management, etc.

Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M) - In this course they are exposed to creative merchandising/ marketing, innovative fashion management practices, Information technology developments, directions of fashion trends and business practices through field visits and industry internships
