About Course What is NID Exam? NID Design Aptitude Test is a means through which aspirants are shortlisted for admission in UG and PG design courses offered at the prestigious National Institute Design (NID) campuses. Candidates need to clear two NID admission tests in order to be eligible for admission in Bachelor of Design (BDes), Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) and Master of Design (MDes) courses offered at its campuses.

Earlier, NID offered admission in its five campuses through NID entrance exam. However, from 2019 onwards two more NID campuses, that is, NID Bhopal and NID Jorhat were added to the list wherein admission was offered in GDPD course on the basis of NID admission test. One can become a designer at an undergraduate level and a post graduate level. So if you miss the bus at an undergraduate level - all is not lost!

NID DAT Eligibility Criteria, Age Limit, Education Qualification. Candidates who want to apply for BDes or GDPD course at NID meet the eligibility criteria if they have cleared or are appearing for their higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examination from any stream (Science, Humanities, Commerce, etc.) from any recognised board such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent in the year 2019-2020 can apply for the exam.

On the other hand, candidates are eligible to apply for MDes course if they have completed their bachelor’s degree from a recognised college/ university. ​Candidates have to meet all the prerequisites set by the National Institute of Design (NID) to apply for the courses offered at NID Ahmedabad, NID Vijayawada and NID Kurukshetra. For Bachelor of Design (B.Des) & Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) programmes Education Qualification: Candidates who have passed or will appear for higher secondary (10+2) qualifying examinations in the academic year 2019–20 in any stream (science, arts, commerce, etc.) from any recognised board of education such as CBSE, IB, ICSE or their equivalent.

Age Limit: The upper age limit for candidates belonging to the general category is 20 years. The upper age limit is 23 years for candidates belonging to reserved categories such as other backward class-non creamy layer (OBC-NCL), scheduled caste (SC) & scheduled tribe (ST). The age limit is 25 years for PWD reserved category candidates. However, the upper age limit is 20 years for foreign applicants.

Education Qualification: A candidate must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications to be considered eligible for admissions. Bachelor degree of minimum 4-year duration in any specialization, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard from any university or institute recognized by law in India. OR Bachelor degree of minimum 3-year duration in any specialization, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard. OR Full-time Diploma of minimum 4-year duration in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture, after 12th standard or equivalent to 12th standard, from any university or institute recognized by law in India. Age Limit: The upper age limit for candidates belonging to the general category is 30 years. The upper age limit is 33 years for candidates belonging to reserved categories such as other backward class-non creamy layer (OBC-NCL), scheduled caste (SC) & scheduled tribe (ST). The age limit is 35 years for PWD reserved category candidates. However, the upper age limit is 30 years for foreign applicants.


How to Apply For NID The registration for admission to NID 2020 has started from October . Interested candidates who satisfy all the prerequisites can apply through online mode. Candidates are advised to familiarise themselves with the eligibility criteria, number of seats, test centres, reservation policy and other relevant information related to admissions prior to the application process. Here are the steps to register for NID 2020.


Step 1: Sign up/Registration Applicants are required to register online before proceeding to fill the application form, at https://admissions.nid.edu.

Step 2: Fill-in Personal & Educational Details Fill in all the required details and click on ‘Save & Proceed’ to go to the next section to ‘Upload Document’.

Step 3: Uploading Your Documents & Signature Candidates should upload a scanned passport photograph which must be in JPG/JPEG format and not exceeding 100 KB in size. It must be a coloured photograph taken at a professional studio. The signature file should be in JPG/JPEG format and not exceeding 100KB in size.

Step 4: Pay Application Fee And Print The application fee is neither refundable nor transferable and the fee is applicable at all the three institutes.

Take a printout of the submitted application form for future reference after paying the prescribed fee amount.


NID Exam Pattern. NID Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT) comprises three phases which include a written exam (Prelims and Mains), studio test and personal interview. Candidates are required to qualify each phase of the exam to gain admission into NIDs. Aspirants must go through the NID DAT 2022 exam pattern so that they can prepare for the exam accordingly. NID DAT will be conducted offline in multiple cities.   • In the first section of NID DAT prelims exam, objective type question are asked

  • OMR sheets are provided to the candidates to mark the answer of the MCQ.

  • Section 1 together contains 22 questions carrying a maximum of 30 marks.

  • The response mark in the OMR sheet will be check digitally

  • The second section comprises a total of four subjective questions.

  • It is mandatory to attempt all the questions of this section According to the exam pattern of NID DAT 2022.

  • There are no negative marks for incorrect answers.

Marking Scheme for NID DAT Prelims 2022 The weightage of Part I of NID DAT Prelims is 30 marks and Part II of the exam is of 70 marks. The marking scheme for NID DAT Prelims varies slightly, every year.   • There will be four options for every MCQ question. Aspirants will have to mark the correct option by darkening the corresponding oval on the OMR sheet using blue or black ball point pen only.

  • Aspirants must darkened only one oval for each question. Candidates must note that marking more than one oval is treated as an incorrect answer.

  • Aspirants can check the right method to darken the oval on side-1 of the OMR answer sheet. Candidates will have to follow the specified method strictly while filling the oval.

  • Candidates are restricted to tear, mutilate or bend the OMR answer sheet.

Candidates have to appear for a studio test followed by a personal interview round at the assigned campus. NID Studio Test: NID studio test for B.Des admissions consists of drawing/sketching, hands-on model making, group discussions, presentations and many more. Candidates shortlisted after the studio round have to appear for the personal interview round. NID Personal Interview: The personal interview round will be held separately according to the course right after the studio test in the same test centres. Note - The examination authority will not provide accommodation, so candidates must arrange their own accommodation. NID DAT Mains exam - After COVID According to the revised NID DAT mains exam pattern, the shortlisted BDes candidates need to upload a theme poster on the topics in a single PDF file with size not exceeding 10 MB. The topics for the theme poster are intimated separately to the shortlisted candidates for mains exam on their registered email id. Candidates can make the poster manually in any media. Along with the theme poster, candidates also need to prepare a digital copy of their sample work or portfolio. The same have to be submitted in a single PDF file, size not exceeding 10 MB. The window to upload the theme poster and portfolio are provided for a week on the official website - admissions.nid.edu. The theme poster can be uploaded in the form of photograph, scanned copy or digitally. NID DAT Exam Pattern 2022 for MDes Course Aspirants applying for admission in NID M.Des courses are required to clear the NID Design Aptitude Test.
